Telefonica Announces Wide-Spread Trials of LTE Networks
Telefonica says that it has reached an agreement with six LTE technology providers to launch LTE test projects in six different countries. The suppliers Telefonica has chosen so far: Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks and zte, will start rolling out the equipment necessary for testing the technology during the coming months. more

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins 60% of Russian 3G Tender
Russia's MegaFon has announced the outcome of a 3G network tender, with Nokia Siemens Networks supplying at least 60% of 3G Node -B Base Stations. MegaFon says that it shall decide upon the territory of the equipment supply within Russia at the same time there shall be no exclusivity rights provided to vendors. more

Zimbabwean Operator Starts Network Expansion
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe says that it has started receiving shipment of equipment worth US$200 million from Sweden and China which, when installed, will avert the shortages of lines. The consignment, comprising base station and core network equipment, is expected to be fully installed by the end of the month. more

Indian telecom equipment beats downturn; grows 20% to nearly $25 billion
The Indian telecom equipment industry reported a 20% growth in revenues to comfortably cross the US$24 billion mark during FY 2008-09 compared to a 24% growth recorded in the previous financial year (2007-08). Indian trade magazine, Voice&Data said that the result was not surprising because despite overall economic slowdown, India has been witnessing over 10 million month-on-month new mobile subscriber additions, and telecom operators have been buying equipment to expand their networks. more

The overall market is expected to decline in 2009 and remain weak through 2011 before seeing a rebound in 2012. ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year
China's zte is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. The company had set itself a target of gaining a top-5 placement by 2011, but did accept that shrinking market share in competitors could bring that date forward. more
