Telecom Equipment Market Expected to Suffer a Sharp Downturn in 2009
The global telecommunications equipment market grew by close to 5% in 2008: a moderate rate of growth that involved a shift in the contribution made by handset components and infrastructure hardware reports IDATE. From a geographical standpoint, Asia was the prime source of growth - specifically China and India - which accounts for two-thirds of the increase in sales worldwide, while representing only just over 40% of the total market (and China and India combined accounting for less than 20%). more

Global Mobile Market to Exceed US$900 Billion in 2008
A report from IDATE says that the world telecom services market is estimated at US$1,365 billion in 2008 - a 4.2% increase over the year before - and is expected to be worth over US$1,416 billion in 2009. With a total turnover estimated at US$742.2 billion in 2008, mobile services account for 54% of the telecom services market and single handedly deliver all of the sector's growth. But the annual growth rate has dropped from more than 12% in 2007 to 8% in 2008. more

3G Services in Asia, Africa Meet Crucial Needs
The latest study of 3G in Emerging Markets, from Strategy Analytics concludes that 3G will meet a pressing need for voice and some data services in under-served markets, but as most of these markets are hugely price sensitive, operators will have to redesign 3G business models to subscriber affordability levels if the technology is to become broadly available. more

Commit Releases Chipset Solution Supporting TD-HSDPA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE
China based Commit, a TD-SCDMA chipset solution vendor, has announced the release of its MARS-II chipset solution and reference design supporting TD-HSDPA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE. The company says its solution can fully meet operators' requirements for commercial TD-SCDMA deployment in terms of seamless handover between TD-SCDMA and 2.5G communications, HSDPA, high-end 3G applications and low power consumption. more
