China Mobile Reported to be in Talks to Buy Telenor Pakistan

China Mobile is reported to be in talks with Norway's Telenor concerning a merger of their respective Pakistani mobile networks. Although both the operators have denied any such development, sources told the local Dawn newspaper that negotiations were being held secretly at the group level. The deal is thought to involve China Mobile buying Telenor Pakistan and then merging the two networks.  more

Warid Telecom Commissions 6,000th Base Station

Four years after it launched its network, Pakistan's Warid Telecom says that it has commissioned its 6,000 base station. As a result Warid is now able to provide GSM services to more than 6000 cities, towns and villages and is covering more than 12000 Km of highways and major roads; across the country.  more

China Mobile Pakistan to Double Number of Base Station by Year-End

China Mobile's ­Pakistani subsidiary, zong is planning to spend up to US$500 million by the end of this year on a substantial expansion of its mobile network, reports the local Daily Times newspaper. The network is expected to double the number of base stations it operates from 4,5000 to around 9,000 by the year-end.  more

Uncertain times ahead as Pakistan's monthly figures continue to disappoint

The customer registration programme instituted by Pakistani regulator the PTA began to take effect in Q3 08, and growth in that period slumped to less than a third of that recorded in Q3 07. Genasys Wins Location Based Services Contract in Pakistan

Genasys says that it has signed an agreement with the firm CellTrack for a LBS project in Pakistan. CellTrack will launch, from the first quarter of 2009, location based services (LBS) in Pakistan. CellTrack has signed agreements with two operators, Ufone and zong, to launch LBS in this country and it is currently into negotiations to extend the services to other operators.  more

Taliban Admit to Kidnapping Two ZTE Engineers in Pakistan

The Chinese government has urged Pakistan to assist in rescuing two Chinese telecoms engineers who have apparently been kidnapped by Taliban militants. The Pakistan based Taliban issued a statement saying that they had taken the two engineers in the Dir district in North West Frontier Province and will issue further demands shortly.  more

Pakistan: Zong on Song as Slowdown Continues

Mobile penetration in Pakistan surpassed 50% during the second quarter of 2008, with an end-June figure of 51.0%. The total number of mobile connections at the end of the month was 88.02m. With monthly net additions averaging around 1.9m so far this year, the 90m mark looks set to be surpassed before the end of the third quarter.  more

Pakistan Subscribers - Slowdown Continues as 50% Penetration Approaches

The total number of mobile connections in Pakistan surpassed the 80m mark in Q1 08, finishing the quarter on 82.51m. The penetration rate was exactly 48% at the end of the quarter. Net additions totalled 5.63m in Q1 08, down from 7.16m in Q1 07, and in fact this was the lowest quarterly total since Q1 06.  more
