Consolidation in Romania as Cosmote buys Zapp
Greece's Cosmote Group confirmed earlier rumours and has signed a deal to buy Romania's Telemobil (zapp) for a total consideration of around EUR205 million. The consideration for the shares of zapp is estimated at approximately EUR61 million (equity value), while Cosmote will also assume the debt and other liabilities of zapp, mainly concerning 3G and CDMA network roll out, estimated at approximately EUR 146 million. more

Romanian 3G Operators Meet Rollout Obligations
Romania's telecoms regulator, ANRCTI has published a report which confirms that the country's two newest 3G license holders, RCS&RDS and zapp have met the initial phases of their 3G rollout obligations. Vodafone and Orange are existing 3G license holders, having been awarded their licenses back in 2005. Cosmote Romania is the sole remaining operator which does not have a 3G licenses. more

Romanian Operator Rolls Out WCDMA Coverage to 15 Cities
Romanian operator, zapp says that it has completed its WCDMA network roll out in fifteen of the nineteen cities that will benefit from 3G coverage by end of June 2008: Brasov, Braila, Sibiu, Arad, Bacau, Satu Mare, Baia Mare, Constanta, Craiova, Ploiesti, Targu Mures, Cluj Napoca, Timisoara, Galati and Pitesti. more

Qualcomm Sells Stake in Romanian CDMA Operator
Saudi Oger has brought out its partner in the Romanian CDMA450 operator, Telemobil - which trades under the brandname, zapp. Saudi Oger, a group controlled by the family of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri, is already one of Telemobil's shareholders through the investment fund Omnia Holdings, which owns 45.76% in Inquam, Telemobil's majority shareholder. Qualcomm also holds 45.76%. more

In the process of winning its 3G licence, zapp says that it committed to rolling out a 3G network covering most of Romania by the end of 2007. The first part of their commitment was concluded this week, when Telemobil paid before due date the first installment worth of US$10.5 million of the total cost of US$35 million of the 3G license. more
