According to a new study from Ovum, global economic downturn depressed valuations and dealmaking in the telecom sector in 4Q 2008. Based on Ovum's report, M&A deal count was 129 in 4Q08, from 192 in 4Q07, with only four deals valued above US$1 billion, from 10 in 4Q07. more

India's Unitech Confirms Telenor in Talks Over Investment
Indian green-field mobile operator, Unitech Wireless has confirmed that Norway's Telenor is one of three companies it is in talks with regarding an investment. Telenor has been named in the past as a possible bidder for a stake in the firm, but has always refused to comment on media reports. more

Telenor Rumoured to be Close to $1.5 Billion Indian Deal
Norway-based Telenor has reportedly been in talks with Indian greenfield operator, Unitech Wireless to take a stake in the firm worth up to US$1.5 billion. Earlier reports that Telecom Italia was also seeking to take a stake in the firm fell to nothing. Kuwait's zain is also understood to be in talks to take a stake in the Indian company - but is thought to be holding out for a majority stake. more

Telecom Italia Denies Bidding for Indian Mobile Operator Stake
Telecom Italia has denied a news report that it is close to investing US$2 billion to take a 49% stake in India's Unitech, which holds a nationwide telecoms license covering all 22 of the license circles. The company has already received radio spectrum in six circles and is aiming to launch services next April. more
