The Fastest Growing Mobile Operators in Africa/Mid-East
The chart shows the fastest growing businesses in the MEA region over a twelve month view. The list includes nine of the names that feature in the Q1 08 list, with zain Iraq coming in at Algerie Telecom MobileÃ's expense. The top two places are the same in the year as they are in the quarter, with TCIÃ's 9.12m just shading IrancellÃ's 7.95m. The other really strong performances in the region were spread across five main markets - with Mobily in Saudi Arabia taking third place ahead of two Egyptian companies, three from Nigeria and one each from Iraq and Kenya. more

East Africa's telecom market has great opportunities for growth
Over 450 telecommunications professionals gathered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for the opening of East Africa Com, the region's annual event for the telecommunications industry. The conference started with a keynote presentation from Bashar Arafeh, Celtel International's COO for the East Africa region, who was keen to point out that "East African markets, being currently under market average, hold plenty of room for growth." more

Zain - A Record Quarter, Again
zain, the former MTC Vodafone, has produced another good set of results. Revenues are up by 32% from KD1.297bn to KD1.677bn (US$5.9bn) while EBITDA has risen by 25% to KD725m. By contrast, net income only increased by 11% to KD1.13bn. The reason for this is not obvious from the company's initial release as after EBITDA, interest receivable and currency effects, the income statement jumps straight to the bottom line. more
