Motorola to Manage Zain's Iraqi Network

­Motorola has announced the signing of a multi-million dollar contract with zain Iraq to provide managed services to the operator. The contract commences immediately and will run for three years. Under the managed services contract, Motorola has been entrusted to improve zain Iraq's network performance, operate and maintain it as well as provide training to its technical support team.  more

Lebanon Awards Management Contracts for State Owned Mobile Networks

The Lebanese government has awarded management contracts to Egypt's Orascom Telecom and Kuwait's zain to operate the two state owned mobile networks, reports the Reuters news agency, citing a cabinet statement. The contracts to manage the networks had expired last month and persistent delays in plans to sell the networks required either an extension to the existing management agreements, or new partners.  more

Four Firms Bidding for Rwanda's 3rd GSM License

Four companies have been shortlisted to bid for Rwanda's third mobile license, the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) has announced. Thirteen companies had purchased tender documents from the regulator, but most chose not to submit a formal bid.  more

The Fastest Growing Mobile Operators in Africa/Mid-East

The chart shows the fastest growing businesses in the MEA region over a twelve month view. The list includes nine of the names that feature in the Q1 08 list, with zain Iraq coming in at Algerie Telecom MobileÃ's expense. The top two places are the same in the year as they are in the quarter, with TCIÃ's 9.12m just shading IrancellÃ's 7.95m. The other really strong performances in the region were spread across five main markets - with Mobily in Saudi Arabia taking third place ahead of two Egyptian companies, three from Nigeria and one each from Iraq and Kenya.  more

Four Companies Interested in Rwanda's 3rd Mobile License

Rwanda's government is moving closer to inviting bids for the country's third mobile network. Speaking at his regular presidential press conference last week, President Paul Kagame said that four companies have already expressed preliminary interest in the license. The four companies were named as zain, Korea Telecom, Orascom and an unidentified Israel company.  more

Zain Iraq Secures Financing for Iraqna Purchase

The National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) has announced a financing package to support the sale of Iraqna, Orascom's subsidiary in Iraq, to zain Iraq for $1.2 billion. The sale was announced last December following disputes between the parties managing the Iraqna network.  more

Zain Seeking to Buy 3 African Operators, European IPO

Kuwait based zain is looking to raise US$5 billion through a stock market listing in a - currently unspecified - European stock exchange and try to acquire operators in three more African countries within a year. In an interview with South Africa based Business Day newspaper, zain's Africa CEO, Chris Gabriel, said that his ambition is to turn zain into one of the world's 10 largest operators by revenue and profit by 2011.  more
