Lebanon Awards Management Contracts for State Owned Mobile Networks
The Lebanese government has awarded management contracts to Egypt's Orascom Telecom and Kuwait's zain to operate the two state owned mobile networks, reports the Reuters news agency, citing a cabinet statement. The contracts to manage the networks had expired last month and persistent delays in plans to sell the networks required either an extension to the existing management agreements, or new partners. more

The Fastest Growing Mobile Operators in Africa/Mid-East
The chart shows the fastest growing businesses in the MEA region over a twelve month view. The list includes nine of the names that feature in the Q1 08 list, with zain Iraq coming in at Algerie Telecom MobileÃ's expense. The top two places are the same in the year as they are in the quarter, with TCIÃ's 9.12m just shading IrancellÃ's 7.95m. The other really strong performances in the region were spread across five main markets - with Mobily in Saudi Arabia taking third place ahead of two Egyptian companies, three from Nigeria and one each from Iraq and Kenya. more

Four Companies Interested in Rwanda's 3rd Mobile License
Rwanda's government is moving closer to inviting bids for the country's third mobile network. Speaking at his regular presidential press conference last week, President Paul Kagame said that four companies have already expressed preliminary interest in the license. The four companies were named as zain, Korea Telecom, Orascom and an unidentified Israel company. more
