Improving Mobile Phone Coverage Across Lake Victoria

Mobile phone coverage across Africa's Lake Victoria is to be expanded in a joint venture between zain, and Ericsson, in an initiative coordinated by the GSM Association. The coverage will comprise the area of the lake where 80 percent of fishing activities take place, allowing communication and SMS exchange to and from phones. This enhancement will fuel economic and social development of the lakeside communities and potentially reduce the number of fishing-related deaths each year.  more

Zain's First Half Revenues Jump 24% to $4 Billion

zain has reported that its first half revenues were up by 24% on the previous year to reach US$4 billion - while net income was up 4.4% to US$533.5 million. The subscriber base rose by 37% to 69.5 million. The company's consolidated EBITDA increased by 46.3% for the same period to reach US$1.77 billion.  more

Zain Denies $12 Billion Deal with France's Vivendi

zain has denied media reports that it has inked a deal to sell its African assets to France's Vivendi for US$12 billion - although it confirmed that talks are ongoing with various parties. Iran Cancels 3rd Mobile License - to Hold New Tender

The Iranian government has reportedly stripped zain of its mobile license in the country, although there seems to be some confusion about whether the company ever had the license in the first place. The local Poul newspaper quoted Iranian Telecommunication Minister Mohammad Soleimani as saying that another tender would be held to find a new partner for the development of the much-delayed project. The report gave no further details.  more
