Zain's First Half Revenues Jump 24% to $4 Billion

Zain has reported that its first half revenues were up by 24% on the previous year to reach US$4 billion - while net income was up 4.4% to US$533.5 million. The subscriber base rose by 37% to 69.5 million. The company's consolidated EBITDA increased by 46.3% for the same period to reach US$1.77 billion.  more

Paltel Boss to Take Over Zain's Merged Palestinian-Jordan Operations

The Zain Group has announced the appointment of Dr. Abdel Malik Al Jaber as CEO of the Zain Levant Region, which is made up of Zain Jordan and Palestine's Paltel - with immediate effect. In addition to his new role as CEO of Zain Levant, Dr. Al Jaber has been appointed Acting General Manager of Zain Jordan, effective July 15, 2009.  more

Zain, Western Union Planning Mobile Money Transfer Service

Zain and Western Union are to work together to deliver mobile money transfer services in countries in Africa and the Middle East through Zain's new Zap platform. The Zap service provides Zain customers access to a full range of transactional services from their mobile phones. Customers can interact with select bank accounts, top-up or transfer airtime, and move money to businesses, friends and family. The service allows customers to pay bills such as electricity, and can even be used to settle grocery bills in the supermarket.  more

Globitel Signs Two Roaming Settlement Contracts

Jordan based roaming services provider, Globitel has announced the signing of a couple of new operator contracts. The firm will be one of the roaming providers for Zain, across all its networks and has also signed a deal with Pakistan based ufone, also for roaming settlement.  more

Cross-group tariffs: good PR but not much else

Prior to 2006, roaming used to be a convoluted process – at least that's what operators claimed. And they could charge as much as they wanted. When the EU began to ask for lower rates, operators retorted that roaming was expensive to administer and difficult to implement. Then Zain (formerly Celtel) came along with its ‘One Network' concept. It removed roaming charges for its customers across Africa, demystified roaming and earned a resounding endorsement from The Economist. The citation read: " Zain Group has in effect created a unified market of the kind that regulators can only dream about in Europe."  more

Zain Launches Borderless Roaming for Mobile Data Services

Zain has announced an expansion of its borderless roaming service to include data services in addition to the existing voice and text messaging. The company says that it is the first mobile operator in the world to successfully introduce cross-border local GRX-based data access, a technical solution which ensures faster access speeds at cost effective local rates than traditional internet roaming.  more

Zain Profits Up by 3.3% to $260 Million

Just a couple of days after announcing 2,000 job cuts, Zain has reported a 3.3% rise in first-quarter profits to KWD 75.7 million (US$260.5 million), compared with KWD 73.3 million a year ago. Consolidated revenues jumps by 25% to KWD 567.2 million (US$1.96 billion), an increase of 25% compared to Q1 2008. Profits were held back due to costs associated with the recent launch of networks in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Ghana.  more

Zain to Cut 2,000 Back-Office and Management Jobs

Zain has announced that it is cutting some 2,000 jobs as it streamlines its operations and increases the outsourcing some back office/non-core functions to strategic partners. The project, Drive2011 is expected to improve Zain's operating margin by 5% within 12 months.  more

Zain Saudi Arabia Passes 2 Million Subscriber Mark

Zain's Saudi Arabia subsidiary has reported revenues of US$135 million in 2008, with active customer numbers totaling 2.01 million. The company, which only lauched services on August 26th, 2008 has secured a market share of 7%, based on Zain estimates.  more

Ericsson to Expand Zain Madagascar network

Ericsson has signed a contract with the Zain Group to expand the core network and the GSM radio access network for Zain Madagascar. The expansion of Zain Madagascar's network, which has been operational since 2005, is centered upon deploying Ericsson's Packet Core Network, including both SGSN and GGSN nodes, and Ericsson's Mobile Softswitch Solution.  more
