The case for network sharing gets stronger

With a mature market, declining voice revenues and now the economic
downturn, the argument for European mobile network operators (MNOs) to share
their networks has never been stronger. Although there have been several
network-sharing initiatives, what is needed is a more coherent commercial and
regulatory framework across the EU to make network sharing the norm rather than
the exception.

High Growth Forecasted for Western European Mobile Communications
A new European market report from Reportlinker notes that the sector has undergone enormous changes in response to regulatory pressure on roaming and interconnection tariffs, competition from numerous new start-up MVNOs, and pressure on voice tariffs and bundled SMS offers which have lowered voice and data ARPU. The company says that revenue growth in coming years will primary depend on the continued increase in subscriber numbers and the use of multiple SIMs, and by the further adoption of rich-media services including music downloads and mobile TV. more

Orange and Yoigo Sign Network Sharing Deal
France Telecom's Orange and Teliasonera's yoigo have announced plans to share their network infrastructure in Spain. The companies have signed a five-year contract to optimise the use of their networks - but did not give any financial details. more
