Carriers should rethink strategies when launching PTT outside the U.S. market

A new report from The Yankee Group has commented that the U.S. operator Nextel has demonstrated a very successful business case by offering bundles of regular voice and push-to-talk (PTT) services to its customers. Because Nextel's PTT is based on Motorola's proprietary iDEN technology, traditional GSM and CDMA mobile operators haven't been able to take advantage of such features until the recent implementation of next-generation PTT technology: push-to-talk over cellular (PoC). In the U.S. market, where postpaid wireless subscribers dominate the user base, Nextel has proved that PTT is a killer application. Even the PTT service newcomers-including Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS and ALLTEL-have enjoyed great momentum since launching PTT services. more

SMS interconnection agreed in the Americas

Wireless Services Corporation (WSC) and CMG Wireless Data Solutions announced today the launch of the first inter-carrier messaging service that allows mobile customers to send SMS's between wireless phone users in Canada, the United States and Latin America. more

Inter-carrier SMS comes to Canada

Four of Canada's cellular networks, Bell Mobility, Microcell, Rogers AT&T Wireless and TELUS Mobility have joined forces to develop inter-carrier SMS services. CMG Wireless Data Solutions has been selected to provide the technology for the service. Many cellular phones sold today in Canada support SMS, but the service is currently limited as customers can only communicate between customers on the same network. To overcome this limitation, the four major wireless operators will enable both origination and termination of SMS between their respective wireless networks. This enhanced functionality will be available to all text messaging subscribers of these four carriers, coast-to-coast. more
