Nortel Wins Chinese Network Optimization Contract

China Mobile has awarded a one-year network optimization contract to Nortel for its largest regional operator, xinjiang Mobile. Under terms of the agreement, Nortel is providing continuous performance assessment to help improve quality and reduce costs for the multi-vendor GSM/GPRS network in the Yili and Bazhou prefectures of China's vast northwestern xinjiang Region. more

Nortel picks up Chinese contract

China Mobile has deployed core and access technology from Nortel Networks to expand and upgrade its GSM networks in the provinces of Shaanxi, Hebei and Liaoning, and in Tianjin Municipality and xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The deployments took place under a series of contracts signed in the second and third quarters of 2003 and collectively estimated to be worth US$60 million. more

Motorola wins Chinese CDMA contract

Motorola says that it is the first supplier to sign a contract with China Unicom for the Phase III expansion of the operator's CDMA2000 1X network. The expansion contract, worth more than US$80 million, will bring advanced mobile communications services to customers in the cities of Nanjing, Suzhou, WuXi, Changzhou, Nantong and Zhenjiang in Jiangsu province, one of the most developed districts of China. more

More networks change hands in China

China Unicom has sold its wholly owned mobile network, Unicom New Century to its listed mobile subsidiary. Unicom New Century provides mobile telecommunications service in the central and northeastern areas of Jilin, Heilongjiang, Jiangxi, Henan, Shaanxi and Sichuan provinces, Chongqing municipality, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China. The total purchase price of the Acquisition amounts to US$580 million and the Company will use its internal cash to finance the Acquisition. more

China Unicom orders Nortel GSM kit

China Unicom has selected Nortel Networks for an estimated US$40 million expansion of its GSM networks in the autonomous regions of xinjiang Uygur and Ningxia Hui, the province of Shanxi, and the municipality of Chongqing. This expansion will increase the overall network capacity to approximately 925,000 subscribers. more

Ericsson to provide IP backbone for China Mobile

Ericsson is to provide its Packet Backbone Network to four more provincial Chinese mobile operators, all subsidiaries of China Mobile. The four operators are ChongQing Mobile Communications Company, HuNan Mobile, YunNan Mobile and xinjiang Mobile. As a result, Ericsson's AXI IP Backbone Routers now form nearly 80% of China Mobile's nationwide backbone network. The IP backbone equipment for all four networks will be installed by the end of this year. more

Nortel wins Chinese GSM contracts

China Mobile has awarded contracts valued at approximately US$78 million to Nortel Networks for an of its GSM digital cellular network in xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, as well as network software upgrades and network optimization in xinjiang and three other areas. In xinjiang, Nortel Networks has already completed a network optimization project for China Mobile, and will now implement its fifth expansion of China Mobile's existing GSM900 network, increasing subscriber capacity by 600,000 to more than one million. Nortel Networks will deploy network software upgrades to support advanced IN (Intelligent Network) functionality in xinjiang, the Hunan and Shaanxi provinces, and the municipality of Tianjin. The software upgrades will also help China Mobile increase subscriber capacity in these four areas." more

Siemens wins Chinese GSM contract

Siemens has been awarded a contract by China Mobile to expand the GSM network in xinjiang Province. The commission covering delivery and installation of the core and radio network including GPRS is worth US$88 million. It will be implemented by Siemens Shanghai Mobile Communications (SSMC). The project's scheduled completion date is August 2002. This contract is the fifth, and to date largest, phase in the overall project to expand the GSM network in xinjiang Province. Siemens will provide the GSM infrastructure for nine cities and regions: Urumchi, Changji, Shihezi, Kuitun, Kelamayi, Tacheng, Bole, Yili, and Aletai. more
