Spanish Growth Slows as Penetration Hits 122%
The number of Spanish mobile customers reached 49.44m at the end of Q1 08, with annual net additions of 2.47m. In proportionate terms, annual growth stood at 5.3%, down 2.5pp compared to the year-earlier figure. Poland Market Update - the Battle Rages on
The total customer base in Poland grew in size to 38.7m at the end of June 2007, with the penetration rate breaking the 100% barrier during the second quarter to finish at 100.4%. Despite this watershed, the fierce competition for subscribers continues unabated. In fact, as we commented in Issue 58 of The Mobile World Briefing, Poland has one of the most competitive markets in the world in terms of customer numbers, with only 531k separating first from thirdd place.
In Q1 of this year Plus GSM (Polkomtel) overhauled ERA (PTC) to take second place behind Orange Poland (PTK), and although Orange stretched its lead slightly in Q2, it is still only 133k subscribers ahead of Plus GSM. ERA has gone from first place in Q3 2006 to third place in Q2 2007 and it recorded the lowest figure in the market for net additions (excluding new entrant P4) for the third successive quarter. As a whole, net additions have been falling since the record high of 2.32m in Q3 2006, and the figure of 0.82m for Q2 2007 was the lowest since Q3 2003. Average quarterly growth stands at just under 3% so far in 2007, compared to 5.8% in the full year 2006 and 6.0% in 2005.
In terms of market share, Orange is just 0.4pp ahead of Plus GSM with 33.8%, while ERA's figure of 32.4% is its lowest in 10 years. more

In the Spanish market, Telefonica Moviles continues its resurgence, adding a further 0.5pp market share in the quarter, its third successive increase, and boosting subscriber numbers to a market-leading 22m. Vodafone is also growing steadily, but at 286k, its quarterly net additions were 3k short of Telefonica's, and a glance at the figures for the past 18 months shows that it is not making any inroads into Telefonica's dominance. more
