World Bank Approves Funding to Extend Affordable Communications Services

The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors today approved an International Development Association (IDA) credit of US$151 million to extend access to affordable communications services to Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. This is the third phase of the Regional Communications Infrastructure Program (RCIP) - a US$424 million regional program that will increase the availability of reliable communications services for citizens, businesses and governments in Eastern and Southern Africa. Under RCIP 3, Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania will receive US$20 million, US$31 million and US$100 million respectively.  more

MTN Gets Loan to Expand Afghan Network

Cambodian Phone Network Gets Funding for Rural Coverage

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, has organized a US $100 million investment in Cambodian mobile network operator, CamGSM to help strengthen the telecommunications sector and expand access to affordable mobile services in rural areas. IFC is providing up to $40 million from its own account and has mobilized an additional $60 million from ABN AMRO, Cordiant Capital, DnB NOR, and Nordea.  more

IFC Supports Development of New Mobile Network in the Palestinian Territories

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is investing US$30 million in Wataniya Palestine, as part of a US$85 million loan, to help build a mobile-phone network in the Palestinian West Bank. Wataniya Palestine is a joint venture of the Palestine Investment Fund and Wataniya Telecom, which is majority-owned by Qatar's Qtel.  more

Indian Operator Secures Funding to Expand Rural Coverage

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group is providing a US$100 million loan to Indian GSM network operator, Idea Cellular to enable the extension of services to Bihar, one of the few states in India without a well-developed telecommunications network. Funding Secured for GSM Expansion in Papua New Guinea

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and Export Development Canada have signed an agreement with Digicel to help increase a nationwide GSM network in Papua New Guinea. The project is expected to expand substantially the reach of telephone service, covering areas previously not reached by existing service providers, as well as improving service quality, stimulating competition in the sector, reducing costs to consumers, and generating significant employment and support to local small and medium enterprises working with Digicel.  more
