World Bank Offers Loans for African Cellphone Networks
IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, has announced its largest financing to date in Sub-Saharan Africa, a US$320 million package, to five operations of Celtel International (an MTC subsidiary) to help expand and upgrade its fast growing mobile networks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Malawi, Sierra Leone and Uganda. IFC, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, has signed a US$420 million loan agreement with Avea, one of Turkey's major mobile phone operators, to help the company refinance and expand its GSM network to reach thousands of additional subscribers throughout Turkey. The agreement is part of a US$1.6 billion long-term financing package arranged by IFC and ABN Amro Bank. more

MTN Nigeria to Create Income Opportunities for Rural Women

Afghanistan's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ATRA) has taken posession of a new radio spectrum monitor to ensure that illegal radio usage does not occur in the country.
