Virgin Trains to offer on-board Wi-Fi Service

T-Mobile UK and Virgin Trains today announced the launch of Wi-Fi internet services for passengers on Pendolino Virgin trains on the West Coast Main Line. The Wi-Fi HotSpot service will provide a wireless broadband connection throughout the entire journey, including all tunnel sections, at high speeds. The HotSpot service has been rolled out by T-Mobile's solution partner, Nomad Digital.  more

Motorola to Expand Taiwanese WiMAX Network

Taiwan's Far EasTone Telecom (FET) has awarded Motorola additional contracts to expand its WiMAX network in Taichung, Taiwan. The projects will boost network performance and provide new management features, preparing FET for the commercial launch of mobile broadband services by the end of 2009.  more

Wireless Broadband Boosts Australian Economy by $4.7 Billion

Australia's rapid take-up of wireless broadband has boosted economic productivity, according to an economist. Dr Paul Paterson of Concept Economics says a study looking at the economic impact of wireless broadband estimates that if take up continues at current levels there will be an ongoing annual productivity dividend to Australians of AU$7.4 billion (US$4.7 billion) - the equivalent of AU$250 (US$158) for every household.  more

Ofcom Outlines Revised Plans for 900Mhz Spectrum

Telstra Demonstrates World's Fastest Mobile Modem

Australian mobile operator, Telstra has shown off the fastest mobile broadband modem on the planet capable of reaching peak network downlink speeds of 21Mbps. According to the findings of a new report commissioned by policy control vendor, Camiant - mobile broadband affords tremendous growth opportunities for operators; however, given the popularity of data cards and smart phones and the substantial capital expenses involved in building additional network capacity, operators can expect to hit network limitations fairly quickly. Hungary to Award Two New Mobile Licenses

Hungary's telecoms regulator, the National Communications Authority (NHH) has issued a tender for two new 15-year mobile licenses and a 3rd tender for mobile infrastructure development. One of these new operators can obtain a frequency set similar to that of the three existing mobile operators. The other applicant is in competition for the authorisation to use the 450 MHz frequency range that is currently not in use.  more
