Desktop Computers are Ceding Ground to Mobile Enabled Laptops

Laptops outstripped desktops for the first time in terms of revenue due to a higher average sale price (ASP). Frost & Sullivan believes another could follow this first in 2009, when laptop unit sales will exceed that of desktops, globally. Analysis from Frost & Sullivan finds that the market earned revenues of US$137.3 billion in 2008 and estimates this to reach US$211.4 billion in 2014.  more

Alvarion and Huawei Join WiMAX Patents Group

Alvarion and Huawei have joined the Open Patent Alliance (OPA) - which manages the WiMAX patent pool. Alvarion and Huawei join current OPA members Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Clearwire, Intel, and Samsung Electronics. As a result, it is expected that licensing terms for patents pertaining to WiMAX, including the associated royalty rates will be more predictable, transparent, and at lower cost. Furthermore the WiMAX patent pool may act as a "one stop shop" where companies building WiMAX solutions can obtain use of the patents more simply, efficiently and cost effectively, under a more competitive royalty structure that charges only for the features required to develop WiMAX products.  more

Hungary Extends Deadline for Mobile License Tenders

Hungary's telecoms regulator, the NHH has decided to extend the deadline for companies tendering bids for two new mobile licenses by two weeks - until 12th December. The amendment of the submission deadline took place with the approval of Minister of Transport, Telecommunication and Energy Pƒ¡l Szabƒ³.  more

Qualcomm Shows Off Rural Mobile PC Base

Qualcomm has launched an alternative PC - which it aims to make available for rural and emerging markets where landline access to the internet is not available. MTN Buys Landline Operator and ISP in Ivory Coast

CDMA2000 Finds Opportunities in Europe, Russia and Emerging Markets in the 450 MHz Band

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) says that CDMA450 is rapidly expanding across all regions, and that 126 operators in 65 countries have deployed or are planning to deploy CDMA450 services; 105 operators in 58 countries are already offering commercial services to more than 15 million people, and 21 operators are trialing or deploying CDMA450 in 8 more countries.  more
