Desktop Computers are Ceding Ground to Mobile Enabled Laptops
Laptops outstripped desktops for the first time in terms of revenue due to a higher average sale price (ASP). Frost & Sullivan believes another could follow this first in 2009, when laptop unit sales will exceed that of desktops, globally. Analysis from Frost & Sullivan finds that the market earned revenues of US$137.3 billion in 2008 and estimates this to reach US$211.4 billion in 2014. more

Wireless Broadband Boosts Australian Economy by $4.7 Billion
Australia's rapid take-up of wireless broadband has boosted economic productivity, according to an economist. Dr Paul Paterson of Concept Economics says a study looking at the economic impact of wireless broadband estimates that if take up continues at current levels there will be an ongoing annual productivity dividend to Australians of AU$7.4 billion (US$4.7 billion) - the equivalent of AU$250 (US$158) for every household. more

BSNL Launches WiMAX Network in India's Gujarat State
India's Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) has launched a WiMAX network in the Indian state of Gujarat - in association with SOMA Networks. Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) is the first enterprise to benefit from this service in the state. GIDC will make this service available to industries housed in their estates, and will also use this service in their own administrative offices. more

WiMAX Provides Wireless Backhaul for Turkey's Largest Video Surveillance Network
Proxim Wireless says that it has provided the wireless backhaul for Turkey's largest video surveillance network in the port city of Bodrum. The Bodrum Police Department had commissioned the construction of a city-wide wireless video surveillance network, utilizing Proxim's Tsunami MP.16 3500 licensed band WiMAX radios as the wireless backhaul to connect over 70 video cameras. more

Verizon Announces LTE Deployment Plans - Going Live in 2010
Verizon's CTO, Dick Lynch has outlined the company's plans to roll out an LTE upgrade for its wireless network. Lynch announced that Verizon Wireless has selected Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent as primary network vendors for its initial LTE network deployments. These two vendors are expected to build the underlying infrastructure that will enable Verizon Wireless to become the first wireless company to offer commercial LTE-based service in the United States, starting in 2010. more

Alvarion says that it has won a contract from Orange Botswana for a turnkey WiMAX deployment, using its 4Motion end-to-end solution. Ofcom Outlines Revised Plans for 900Mhz Spectrum
