More Tussles Over India's BlackBerry Security Dispute
The ongoing dispute between the Indian government and BlackBerry maker, Research in Motion took another twist when, in a submission to the Department of Telecom (DoT), the company claimed that there are four other companies with equally secure email platforms. The company said that targeting BlackBerry handsets and ignoring the others would not solve the security concerns that the Indian government says are behind its demands for access to BlackBerry emails. more

Smart Mobile Device Shipments Jump 53% to 118 Million in 2007
The latest market data from analyst firm Canalys shows how much the converged device market (all smart phones and wireless handhelds) has grown over the past year. These, typically high-end, devices represented around 10% of the global mobile phone market by units in 2007, with annual growth of 60% making them one of the fastest growing segments of the technology industry. Year-on-year growth climbed every quarter throughout 2007, to reach a peak of 72% in Q4. more

Nokia Buys Software House, Trolltech
Nokia has announced that it is buying mobile applications developer, Trolltech for US$153 million. Trolltech specializes in creating development platforms which mobile application developers can use to write their software programs. The company also developed an application platform and UI for Linux-based mobile phones, which has recently been ported to also work on Windows Mobile and CE based devices. more

64 Million Smartphones Shipped Worldwide in 2006
Canalys' latest market estimates show that Nokia, RIM, Motorola and Palm each held onto a place among the top five worldwide smart mobile device vendors in Q4 2006, but some positions changed. Nokia retained its lead, while RIM moved up a place into second, nudging ahead of Motorola. Palm remained in fourth, while Sony Ericsson broke into fifth place for the first time since Q2 2004, thanks largely to shipments of FOMA devices in Japan. Its EMEA smart phone shipments were also considerably higher than in previous quarters thanks to the arrival of new models. more
