Worldwide Mobile Phone Sales Down 6% - Smartphones Up 27% in Q2
Worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 286.1 million units in the second quarter of 2009, a 6.1 per cent decrease from the second quarter of 2008, according to Gartner. Smartphone sales surpassed 40 million units, a 27 per cent increase from the same period last year, representing the fastest-growing segment of the mobile-devices market. more

GPS and WiFi are hot
Ovum's data (collated from DeviceMine and Ovum research) identified 77
smartphone models released by key manufacturers in the sample period. Of these,
59 handsets had GPS capability and 49 had WiFi, indicating that these
technologies are now key features across nearly all smartphones, not just
high-end models. Some operators still have a reluctance to admit WiFi-equipped
handsets onto their networks, but Ovum believes consumers now expect WiFi to be
present in smartphones.

AdMob Sees Rising Apple Device Traffic from Western Europe/Asia
Mobile advertising agency, AdMob has reported that while North America leads with 58 percent of iPhone and iPod touch users, Western Europe and Asia have increasingly become popular geographic regions, representing 26 and seven percent of Apple device users, respectively. The worldwide ratio of iPhone to iPod touch users in the AdMob network was roughly two to one in June; although this varied from region to region, this ratio has remained relatively constant over the last several months, implying a similar growth rate for both devices worldwide. more

Dell Renews Talk of an Own-Label Smartphone
Dell has resurrected talk of a smartphone at an analysts presentation and confirmed that it is in talks with several operators to launch a range of handsets. There have previously been reports that Dell had already developed a smartphone, but been rebuffed by European and American operators who felt it was a bit clunky compared to other vendors. Chinese operators however were reported to be interested in the handsets. more

Wi-Fi Usage by Smartphones Impacting Mobile Content Revenues
Mobile billing service provider, Bango has warned that over 20% of people visiting web sites to purchase content using their mobile phones are now connecting via Wi-Fi. The firm says that this presents a major challenge to both content providers and operators as these mobile visitors are unrecognized by the networks, making it difficult to sell and market mobile services to them and hence impacting mobile content revenues. more
