Dialog Telekom to Deploy Solar and Wind-Powered Base Stations in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan operator, Dialog Telekom is to deploy ten solar and wind-powered base stations in the country. The trial, which will deploy five off-grid and five on-grid base stations, has seen two sites go live this month and a further eight sites will go live in March and April this year. The goal of the trial is to use a number of different scenarios with equipment from eight different vendors to test  the range of options available and the commercial viability of rolling out mobile networks using renewable forms of energy.  more

Qualcomm has introduced its second-generation embedded Gobi module, delivering multi-mode 3G mobile Internet access on either HSPA or CDMA2000 EV-DO networks in markets around the world. The Gobi2000 module offers a wide range of enhancements, including support for additional radio frequencies, increased data speeds, enhanced GPS functionality and support for additional operating systems such as windows 7.  more

Acquisitions Boosting US Companies' Growth Rates

The acquisitions of Dobson, Rural and Suncom have served to boost the number of net additions over the past twelve months at AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile respectively. AT&T already has Centennial in its sights for 2009, while VerizonÃ's acquisition of Alltel is set for closure imminently. As yet, T- Mobile has announced no riposte and in fact, it is difficult to see that there is a meaningful acquisition it could make, unless it wants to enter the murky world of CDMA which it has shown no inclination to do so far.  more
