Turkish Operator Deploys Wind-Powered Base Station

Turkish mobile network operator, Avea has deployed what it says is the first hybrid wind-powered base station in the country. The new 6kW wind turbine was manufactured by Scottish firm Proven Energy and installed by Turkish resellers Girasolar.  more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

Wind Powered Recharge "Tent " for Mobile Phones

Orange UK has announced the launch of a freestanding wind powered mobile phone charging station for attendees of the infamous Glastonbury music festival later this month. At over 7 meters in height, the free standing REcharge Pod is a self sufficient unit that supports a wind generator and solar panels and can charge up to 100 mobile phones simultaneously. It is estimated that the Orange REcharge pod will charge thousands of mobile phones over the course of the 3 day festival.  more
