EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

Ericsson Profits Rise - Misses Sales Forecast

Ericsson has reported that its Q2 pre-tax profits rose to SEK9.3 (US$1.4) billion from SEK8.3 billion in the same period a year ago. Sales totaled SEK47.6 billion in the second quarter, just missing a SEK47.8 billion forecast. Gross margin was stable sequentially and up 0.4%-points year-over-year. The operating margin increased sequentially, excluding Sony Ericsson, as a result of increased sales and a completed streamlining of the former Marconi operations. more

i-mode to come to the UK

mmO2 and DoCoMohave signed a long-term agreement under which O2 will launch the i-mode mobile internet service in the UK, Germany and Ireland. Under the terms of the agreement, O2 is licensed by DoCoMo to offer the i-mode capability to the 22 million customers of its 2/2.5G and 3G mobile communications networks. more

i-mode goes Greek

Greece's Cosmote has signed up to license the i-mode wireless internet service from Japan's DoCoMo. The two leading mobile operators have signed today an agreement, under which Cosmote will offer its i-mode service over its 2.5G GPRS network and 3G UMTS network, with DoCoMo providing its know-how, technology and patents. more

i-mode spreads to Italy

Japan's DoCoMo and the Italian GSM network operator, wind Telecomunicazioni have announced a strategic i-mode partnership in the Italian market to launch i-mode services on wind's GPRS network. The agreement also introduces wind into the i-mode alliance, the group led by DoCoMo that comprises all the operators that have launched i-mode, and that offers its members the opportunity to market handsets specially adapted for their own services. more
