Alcatel-Lucent Opens Alternative Energy Lab for Telecoms Infrastructure

Alcatel-Lucent has announced the operational launch of an alternative energy laboratory and pilot site dedicated to the telecoms sector. Located on its Bell Labs research site in Villarceaux, France, this station forms part of an Alternative Energy strategic program launched by Alcatel-Lucent to respond to the growing demand from wireless operators for energy-autonomous and green wireless networking equipment that can provide communications capabilities even in remote areas with no access to commercial power grids.  more

Turkish Operator Deploys Wind-Powered Base Station

Turkish mobile network operator, Avea has deployed what it says is the first hybrid wind-powered base station in the country. The new 6kW wind turbine was manufactured by Scottish firm Proven Energy and installed by Turkish resellers Girasolar.  more

Pannon Commissions Wind-Powered Base Station

Hungary based mobile network, Pannon says that it recently commissioned the country's first wind-powered base station. The village of Kálló in Nógrád County offers suitable wind conditions throughout the year, meaning the wind generator can contribute up to 50% of the base station's power demand.  more

Vodafone Aims to Half its CO2 Emissions by 2020

Vodafone has said that by 2020 it intends to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50% against its 2006/7 baseline of 1.23 million tonnes. The company said that this target will be achieved principally by improvements in energy efficiency and increased use of renewable energy.  more

Motorola Tests Wind and Solar Powered Base Station

Motorola says that it has deployed a wind and solar power system to operate MTC Namibia's GSM cell site at Dordabis village in the Khomas region of Namibia. The trial with MTC Namibia supports the African operator's strategy for increased voice and data service coverage in rural areas of Namibia and is the first of its kind globally. more
