Wind Hellas Seeking to Restructure Debt
The parent company of Greek mobile network operator, Wind Hellas says that it is in talks with its majority shareholder, Weather Investments to restructure its debt as the company faces increased competition in the local telecoms market. The company ended July with debt of EUR 3.2 billion. more

WIND Hellas - Budget brand continues to burgeon
The Weather Investments-backed company WIND Hellas operates two brands in Greece, WIND and Q-Telecom. The combined customer total of the two was 5.27m at the end of Q1 09, a gain of 73k in the quarter and 687k in the year. Both of these figures showed improvements compared to the year-earlier figures of 59k and 418k respectively. On a proportionate basis, annual growth stood at 15.0%, up from 10.0% for the prior twelve-month period. more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

Comptel Wins Greek Number Portability Contract
Greek operator WIND Hellas has selected Comptel to provide a Provisioning and Activation Solution, as well as Mobile Number Portability (MNP) functionality. This deal follows the announcements in 2007 of Comptel being chosen as preferred supplier by Orascom Telecom, which is controlled by Weather Investments - the owner of WIND Hellas. more

Wind Group - ARPU holds up in Italy as Greek business improves profitability
Both European subsidiaries of Naguib SawirisĂ' Weather Investments have recently reported first quarter results, both showing net subscriber growth of less than 2% in the traditionally slow first quarter. In Greece, the combined total of WIND Hellas and prepaid-only unit Q-Telecom recorded an increase of just 1.3% in Q1. Meanwhile in Italy, WIND managed 1.9% growth, although there is an error margin here of more than 0.3pp due to the fact that customers tnumbers are only released to the nearest 0.1m. more
