Maltese telco, Go says that it has launches an Alvarion supplied wimax network across the island. As an awarded licensee of the 3.5 GHz frequency band in Malta, Go Mobile is required by the Malta Communication Authority to complete network rollout and provide 99% nationwide coverage by October 2009. more

Intel Invests in Japanese WiMAX Network Operator
Japanese wimax network operator, UQ Communications has announced a cooperation with Intel to boost the uptake of wimax services in the country. In addition to working with UQ on embedded technology, Intel Capital invested US$43 million in the company. UQ Communications will utilize the funding to continue the nationwide expansion of UQ wimax service in Japan, with the commitment to provide wimax coverage to 90 percent of the country by 2012. more

Sequans Ships its Millionth WiMAX Chip
Sequans Communications says that it has shipped its one millionth wimax chip. Sequans was founded in 2003 and over the years since has brought nine wimax chips to market, including chips for base stations and subscriber stations for both fixed and Mobile wimax, and two RFICs. Sequans newest generation of chips, its 65nm series of baseband and triple band RF single die solutions, introduced early this year, features the highest level of integration yet achieved in the wimax industry. more

Smartphone sales buck the recession
A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession. more

3G-4G to Account for 30% of Global Wireless Subscriptions by 2013
At the end of 2008, only 11% of worldwide wireless subscriptions were 3G. By the end of 2013, the percentage of 3G and 4G subscriptions will reach 30%, reports In-Stat. This trend is reflected in fourth quarter 2008 wireless infrastructure contract awards. more

Recession isn't holding back mobile broadband subscribers
Market research firm Infonetics Research released the fourth quarter (4Q08) edition of its Mobile Broadband Cards, Routers, Services, and Subscribers report last week. The report found that worldwide, the number of mobile broadband subscribers (including W- CDMA/HSPA and CDMA2000/EV-DO) jumped 125% in 2008 over 2007, hitting 210.5 million, and are expected to top 1 billion by 2013. more
