Europe to Open up GSM Spectrum to LTE and WiMAX Services

­Technical rules on how the 900 and 1800 MHz radio frequency bands should be opened up to 4G based services have just been adopted by the European Commission. The rules are designed to avoid interference problems with existing GSM and 3G devices and must be implemented by Member States by the end of this year.  more

UK Regulator Outlines Plans for 4G License Auction

­The UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom has announced the proposed details for its upcoming radio spectrum auction which is expected to pave the way for 4G services in the country. The regulator says that the spectrum auction is the largest ever single auction of additional spectrum for mobile services in the UK, equivalent to three quarters of the mobile spectrum in use today and 80% more than the 3G auction which took place in 2000.  more

Nepal Planing WiMAX Network - Possible Fourth Mobile Network

Nepal's Minister for Information and Communications, Shankar Pokharel has said that the country will shortly be deploying a wimax network as soon as the budget for the upcoming fiscal year is approved. The network is being deployed to boost online services for the government.  more

Indian BWA Auction Continues on Day 13 of Bidding

Bidding in India's BWA/wimax spectrum auction reached Rs. 11,518 crore (US$2.4 billion) on its thirteenth day. That fee is for a single nationwide license, although the bidding is for regional licenses which any company had to build up to create a national coverage. Ten clock rounds were completed today, bringing the total number of clock rounds completed to date to 102.  more

Thailand Aiming for WiMAX License Auction Next February

Thailand's telecoms regulator expects to grant BWA/wimax licenses next February and has set up a committee to study ways of granting the licences, reports The Nation newspaper. The review will run in parallel with the ongoing review of 3G license tender plans.  more

Denmark Planning Auction of LTE/WiMAX Radio Spectrum

Denmark is to hold a consultation on auctioning off radio spectrum in the 2.5ghz bands. The Ministry for Science, Technology and Innovation (National IT and Telecom Agency) said that 205MHz of spectrum will be auctioned in total: 190MHz in the 2.5GHz band (2500-2690MHz) and 15MHz in the 2010MHz band (2010-2025MHz).  more

Lack of Last Mile Frequencies Affecting Kenya's Fibre Roll-Out

The Kenyan government should re-posses all unused last mile frequencies for redistribution to avoid delaying the inland fibre-optic roll-out plan says UUNet Kenya. The corporate network provider's Managing-Director Mr. Tom Omariba said the industry is currently experiencing an artificial shortage of the last mile spectrum because dormant players have acquired these frequencies for speculative purposes.  more

Hong Kong Awards Three WiMAX Licenses

The auction of BWA (wimax) licenses in Hong Kong has been completed - with three winners. Three bidders have successfully bid for a total of 90 MHz of radio spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band at a total of spectrum utilization fee (SUF) of HK$1.5357 billion (US$198 million).  more
