WiMAX Accounts for Over 25% of Last Mile Broadband Stimulus Applications
Over 300 wimax applications accounted for around a quarter of the total last mile broadband stimulus applications received by the USA's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Department of Agriculture's RUS fund, according to the wimax Forum. In total, wimax-related applicants applied for US$1.6 billion of the $14.2 billion requested by the 1,130 total applicants for last mile deployments. more

Lack of Last Mile Frequencies Affecting Kenya's Fibre Roll-Out
The Kenyan government should re-posses all unused last mile frequencies for redistribution to avoid delaying the inland fibre-optic roll-out plan says UUNet Kenya. The corporate network provider's Managing-Director Mr. Tom Omariba said the industry is currently experiencing an artificial shortage of the last mile spectrum because dormant players have acquired these frequencies for speculative purposes. more

Over Half of Cellular Backhaul Capacity will be Ethernet by the End of 2011
While microwave will remain the most common last mile link medium, Ethernet is playing an increasing role in supporting backhaul needs for cellular and wimax networks. Over half of cellular backhaul capacity will use Ethernet by the end of 2011, reports In-Stat. The transition to Ethernet will vary by region, depending on where mobile operators are in their transition to 3G and LTE networks. more

Nortel and India's Chhattisgarh State Enhance Communications With WiMAX
Nortel is teaming with India's Chhattisgarh State Government to modernize its communications infrastructure through a new, high-bandwidth State Wide Area Network (SWAN) which will - for the first time - connect all the departments of the state. The Chhattisgarh SWAN (CG SWAN) is a hybrid network with a mix of wireless and wireline access supporting voice, data and video traffic. It will be one of the largest fixed wimax deployments in the country for e-government, providing access to 3,000 locations in the State. more
