EU Aims to Bungee Jump its Wireless Broadband Capacity
A new initiative named Beyond Next-Generation Mobile Broadband (BuNGee) aimed at a tenfold increase of mobile broadband infrastructure capacity density has been launched. The €4.7 million initiative is funded in large part by the European Commission and will draw upon collaboration among the consortium members comprising European service providers, technology equipment vendors, universities, and research organizations. more

Qualcomm and Broadcom Wave a Paper and Declare "Peace For Our Time"
The acrimonious patent battle between Qualcomm and Broadcom is finally over. The two firms have entered into a settlement and multi-year patent agreement, which will result in the dismissal with prejudice of all litigation between the companies, including all patent infringement claims in the International Trade Commission and U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, as well as the withdrawal by Broadcom of its complaints to the European Commission and the Korea Fair Trade Commission. more

Smartphone sales buck the recession
A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession. more

USA based wimax operator, Clearwire Corp. has brought in former Vodafone director, Bill Morrow to act as the joint-CEO of the firm - replacing co-founder and CEO Ben Wolff. Bill Morrow is widely credited as being the mastermind behind the turnaround of Vodafone Group's former Japanese operations - but left the firm in 2006 for personal reasons. more
