2012 Will Be a "Bellwether" Year for 4G
ABI Research has been tracking cities and population coverage for 4G for the past year. At the end of 2009 there were more than 170 802.16e carriers across 65 countries, covering 480 million people. That number is projected to cross the 1 billion mark by 4Q-2012. USB dongles have been an excellent vehicle to prime the market along with CPE and laptops, but mobile handsets will be essential to the success of wimax. Yota, Sprint, and Clearwire have already started beefing up their lineups with models from HTC and Samsung. more

WiMAX Forum Speeds Up Development of New WiMAX Standards
The wimax Forum has launched an initiative to accelerate wimax features that enhance the average performance of its current Release 1 technology by more than 50 percent while remaining compliant with the IEEE Standard 802.16e. Based on this accelerated schedule, certified products using these enhancements are expected in late 2010. more

WiMAX Deployments Go Global with 519 in 146 Countries
In spite of the financial downturn which has impacted telecom investments, wireless broadband Internet deployments based upon wimax have reached 519 in 146 countries, including 95 wimax networks deployed by 2G mobile operators. Of the 519 wimax deployments, 112 were added in 2009. The wimax ecosystem advanced certification activity with 86 products receiving wimax Forum Certified status this year. more

Future of WiMAX uncertain, as Clearwire investors write off billions of dollars

"Over the last two or three years, wimax has gained a strong foothold in
developing countries in which there is a need for broadband, but the fixed
infrastructure is poor. However, Analysys Mason doubts that the developing
market offers sufficient growth potential and size to sustain continued
investment from such heavyweights as Cisco Systems, Intel and Motorola without
additional sales in the developed markets. But in the developed markets of
Europe and the USA, we see some early signs of a difficult future for wimax.
