Smartphone sales buck the recession
A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession. more

The WiMAX market is heating up quickly, with worldwide sales of fixed and mobile WiMAX equipment up 6% in 3Q07 to $206 million following a 14% jump in 2Q07, says Infonetics Research in its latest report. Worldwide unit shipments of fixed and mobile WiMAX equipment are up 16% in 3Q07, driven by continued rollout of new fixed and mobile WiMAX networks, and further expansion of those already in operation, the report shows. more

News that Sprint Nextel and Clearwire have called off plans to jointly build a nationwide WiMAX-based network has delivered a significant blow to the WiMAX community, says Analysys. Sprint Nextel revealed on Friday that it would not be following through with the previously announced plans to build a mobile WiMAX network with Clearwire; at least not within the timescales previously mentioned. more

After years of market uncertainty, with investors wringing their hands and restructuring their finances, 3G has finally gained credibility. "3G subscriptions, including CDMA2000, are forecast to hit 285 million by the end of 2006," says ABI Research's Asia-Pacific director, Jake Saunders. He goes on to say that, "Operators' overall capital expenditure will grow for the fourth year to reach $126.4 billion, and annual 3G-related handset shipments should pull past 300 million." more

Wireless Operators Rapidly Building Next-Gen Networks
Mobile operators will create their next generation networks using a range of wireless broadband and cellular technologies, including W-CDMA, WiFi, and wimax, says a new report by Infonetics Research. And they're moving fast. According to the study, the 18 North American, European, and Asia Pacific carriers interviewed spent an average of US$2.9 billion in 2005 on next-gen mobile and wireless broadband equipment, and will spend US$4.1 billion in 2007, a 41% increase. more

3G LTE Could Enhance 3G Networks
Amid growing interest in alternative technologies, such as DVB-H and wimax, 3G is set to fight back with 3G LTE, or Super 3G, which could dramatically enhance the capabilities of 3G networks from 2009, according to a new report from Sound Partners Research. HSPA (high-speed packet access) and MBMS (multimedia broadcast and multicast service) bring important capability enhancements to W-CDMA. However, they do not match broadcasting technologies (such as DVB-H) or broadband wireless access (such as WiMAX) for delivering mobile TV, Internet access and other important services. more
