Mobile backhaul equipment market growing fast, with no letup in sight

Mobile backhaul equipment investments jumped a healthy 19% in 2008 to $4.6 billion worldwide, and revenue is set to explode over the next 5 years and beyond, reports Infonetics Research. The report also said that the most quickly changing technologies between 2008 and 2013 are Ethernet microwave and Ethernet copper and fiber. In all the major world regions, operators will gradually shift to Ethernet backhaul, although it will be a slower shift in Asia Pacific and Central/Latin America, as a higher proportion of overall mobile traffic remains voice for a longer period.  more

Using WiMAX to Link Ambulances to Hospitals

A new ambulance communications system will enable doctors to diagnose and begin treating critically ill patients before they reach hospital. Diagnosing and treating a critically ill or injured patient as early as possible can mean the difference between life and death. A new communications system between a moving ambulance and its hospital base allows the simultaneous transmission of bandwidth-hungry video and ultra-sonic images, telephone communications and patient data, all at the same time.  more

Regulation & Radio Electric Spectrum in Latin America and the Caribbean

The saturation of the traditional markets of telecommunications operators, the convergence of services and the desire of governments to increase accesses and broadband coverage are some of the reasons that Latin American and Caribbean nation Governments are looking at the granting of radio electric spectrum licenses, mainly oriented to the implementation of UMTS/HSPA and wimax, with great optimism. Research firm, Signals says that it believes that the optimal assignment of this resource should revolve around three essential items: the delivery systems, the coverage guidelines and the deployment timetables that are imposed as a limit for the commercial launch of the services.  more

It's Make Or Break For WiMAX, Says Analysys

This year will be decisive in the development of wimax, which experienced major setbacks in 2007, says Analysys. "WiMAX suffered a major setback when the partnership between US operator Sprint Nextel, one of the technology's strongest advocates, and Clearwire fell apart in November," says Andrew Parkin-White, Principal Analyst at Analysys, and co-author of Mobile Market Perspectives 2008 (A summary of recent research into the evolving mobile market).  more

FOCUS: WiMAX makes first steps in Russia

MOSCOW, July 17 (Prime-Tass) -- Although many Russians have not yet grown accustomed to GPRS and EDGE for mobile services and Wi-Fi and ADSL for Internet access, all these abbreviations and technologies might be soon replaced by a single one - WiMAX. Several Russian companies already offer WiMAX services and more are planning to roll out WiMAX but how fast this service will develop is not yet clear. more

Multimedia Services Demand Urgent Planning for Expanded Backhaul Capacity

The growth of mobile data and multimedia services over high-bandwidth 3G networks has mobile operators, traditional wireline carriers, and cable companies alike preparing to make critical choices in an effort to expand the capacity of cellular networks. According to a new study from ABI Research, existing backhaul solutions will not have the bandwidth to serve the increased consumer demand for mobile video and other advanced data services. more

Algeria Becomes the Arab World's WiMAX pioneer.

WiMAX is commercially available in Algeria, while several operators in many Arab countries have started testing the service. Smart Link Communication (SLC) has deployed WiMAX to provide broadband wireless services in Algeria. SLC's goal is to build a wireless broadband backbone covering the national territory, to develop the metropolitan broadband networks, and to set up an independent new generation telecom infrastructure. On July 25, 2005, SLC launched the first national multi-services network. The deployment of this network makes it possible to develop services based on Broadband Wireless Access (BWA), VoIP, Virtual Private Network (VPN-IP MPLS). Algeria's tough and mountainous terrain makes it an ideal candidate for wireless connectivity solutions. more
