O2 UK added 3,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots
O2 UK has expanded its Wi-Fi deal to include BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots - adding some 3,000 hotspots, including most branches of Starbucks to its inventory. The partnership, which existing customers will see come into effect today, coincides with an upgrade to O2's Mobile Broadband Connection Manager software, enabling users to manage their data consumption more effectively. more

Cash Machines to Come with Wi-Fi Service
UK based operator of cashpoint (ATM) machines, Cashbox has signed a deal with BT Openzone to embed Wi-Fi hotspots into its cashpoint machines. As a result of a new five-year deal between Cashbox and BT, the Wi-Fi service will initially be available in 10 of Cashbox's client locations, of which there are more than 2,500 across the UK. more

BT Wi-Fi usage doubles in a year
Users of Wi-Fi hotspots operated by the UK's BT clocked up twice the number of minutes online between April and September 2008, than the same period last year. The half year figures, combining BT Openzone and BT FON are 100% up on the same period in 2007 and 57% up on the previous six months. more

Business Use of Wi-Fi Hotspots Increases by 46%
iPass has published the latest edition of its Mobile Broadband Index, which tracks the wireless use patterns of mobile workers around the world. The report shows worldwide business use of iPass Wi-Fi hotspots increased by 46% from the first half of 2007 to the first half of 2008 and that users of 2.5G and 3G mobile broadband technologies in the US increased their data traffic in the second quarter of the year by 59% between 2007 and 2008. more

Asia-Pacific leads high-speed Internet connectivity, but wide divide prevails
The International Telecoms Union (ITU) has reported that while some Asia-Pacific economies are world leaders in information and communication technologies (ICT) where broadband access is ultra-high speed, affordable and close to ubiquitous, in most of the region's poorer countries Internet access remains limited and predominantly low-speed. A new report finds evidence that ICTs and broadband uptake foster growth and development, but the question remains as to the optimal speed that should be targeted in view of limited resources. more

Wi-Fi hotspots are continuing their torrid growth in 2008. According to ABI Research's WI-FI Hotspots Forecasts, by the end of this year global hotspots will grow by 40% over 2007. The greatest growth and the largest number of hotspots continue to be found in Europe. While the UK has long led in European Wi-Fi hotspots, there is also marked growth in France, Germany, and Russia. more
