Mobile Number Portability More Attractive to India's Postpaid Users

The introduction of Mobile Number Portability is considered good news for consumers, but presents a looming threat for mobile operators since it presents consumers with the choice of retaining their current mobile phone numbers even if they change their operator. And according to a recently conducted Mobile Consumer Insights study conducted by The Nielsen Company to gauge consumer attitudes and behavior towards mobile operators in India, it seems that close to one in five (18%) Indian mobile phone subscribers would change their mobile operator if Mobile Number Portability is introduced into the market.  more

Department of Telecom Updates on Indian 3G License Plans

India's Department of Telecom (DoT) has announced the availability of the radio spectrum that will be made available if and when the 3G licenses are finally auctioned. The document shows that the government could earn an additional Rs 21,480 crore if the frequencies are auctioned according to the finance ministry's formula.  more

Claims of Cellphone Jamming During Tata Motors Factory Protests

Protesters outside the Tata Motors factory in India's West Bengal have accused the local phone companies of blocking the mobile phones. As some 30,000 protesters lined the streets around the factory to complain that the land was taken from local farmers, it was reported that many users were having to walk for a mile or more before being able to use their mobile phones.  more

Bharti Airtel Granted Additional Radio Spectrum

India's Bharti Airtel has been granted additional radio spectrum in five of its operational circles, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (West), Assam, West Bengal and Haryana. The company has also expecting to receive extra radio spectrum in five other circles, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Chennai, within the next couple of days.  more

Maoist terrorists in parts of India have issued warnings to villages to stop using cellphones, reports The Hindu newspaper. There did not seem to be any specific reason for their ban on cell phones, other than possibly the ongoing terrorising of the countryside. more

Indian Regulator Orders Tariff Changes

India's regulator, TRAI has issued an order to the mobile network operators in the States of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh not to charge differential tariffs for calls terminating in BSNL network and other service providers networks. Following a license amendment, calls between Mumbai Metro & Maharashtra Telecom Circle, Chennai Metro & Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle, Kolkata Metro & West Bengal Telecom Circle and UP (East) & UP (West) Telecom Circle Service Areas were treated as intra-service area calls for the purpose of call routing and levy of ADC. more

Siemens wins Asian GSM-R contracts

Siemens has received orders from China and India to build mobile networks for railroad communication, hence achieving a breakthrough for the GSM Railway (GSM-R) communication platform on the Asian market. A framework agreement with the Chinese Ministry of Railways envisages long-term strategic cooperation. The first project entails equipping the 470 kilometer high-speed line from Jinan to Qingdao, south of Beijing . In India, the first project will involve Siemens equipping around 700 kilometers of rail track for the Indian Railways subsidiary North Frontier Railways in the northeastern states of West Bengal , Bihar and Assam with GSM-R. more
