Global Mobile Market to Exceed US$900 Billion in 2008

A report from IDATE says that the world telecom services market is estimated at US$1,365 billion in 2008 - a 4.2% increase over the year before - and is expected to be worth over US$1,416 billion in 2009. With a total turnover estimated at US$742.2 billion in 2008, mobile services account for 54% of the telecom services market and single handedly deliver all of the sector's growth. But the annual growth rate has dropped from more than 12% in 2007 to 8% in 2008.  more

Ericsson Profit Margins Under Pressure - But Better Prospects than Rivals

Fitch has affirmed the debt ratings for Ericsson as stable and the Issuer Default rating (IDR) and senior unsecured rating of 'BBB+.' Fitch said that the affirmation of Ericsson's ratings reflect the company's leading industry position in mobile network equipment, a growing Professional Services business, which should provide some earnings protection in light of the coming industry downturn, healthy liquidity and strong balance sheet. more

Femtocell Designs "sniff" out cells: Enables Self-Organizing Wireless Networks

picoChip has announced three software reference designs that provide the first integrated network listen (or 'sniffer') capabilities for femtocells. The PC8210, PC8211 and PC8810 Radio Environment Scanners (RESs) enable femtocells to detect wcdma, GSM and TD-SCDMA networks respectively.  more

Qualcomm Achieves World's First HSPA+ Data Call

Qualcomm says that it has completed the world's first data call using High-Speed Packet Access Plus (HSPA+) network technology. The call achieved a data transfer rate of more than 20 Mbps in a 5 MHz channel. HSPA+ will allow operators to double the data and triple the voice capacity of their networks compared to current HSPA deployments.  more

Anadigics Offers Power Amp for 3G Phones in the GSM900 Bands

Anadigics has announced its new AWT6281 HELP3 wcdma Linear Power Amplifier (PA) engineered specifically for use in 3G handsets operating in the GSM900 bands. The company said that the new power amplifier extends the operating time of 3G handsets and data cards, which is critical for successful operation using today's High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) networks. AWT6281 has been specified by leading chipset manufacturers for selected reference designs.  more

Icera to Acquire Sirific Wireless for RF CMOS Technology

UK based software defined wireless modem chipset developer, Icera has announced plans to merge with Sirific Wireless, a fabless semiconductor company specializing in CMOS RF transceivers. Icera says that the merger will enable it to deliver a complete chipset solution for the mobile broadband market, which industry analysts expect to grow from just 90 million subscribers today to 1.3 billion by 2012.  more

UK Operators Sharing 3G Spectrum for Mobile TV Trials

Orange and T-Mobile UK have announced they intend to jointly pilot a new mobile TV and multimedia broadcast service in London using NextWave Wireless' 3G MBMS based TDtv solution. The pilot, scheduled for the second half of 2008, is designed to demonstrate how the cost of providing mobile TV services can be significantly reduced when mobile operators share widely-available unpaired 3G spectrum and a standards-based TDtv broadcast network.  more

Wholesale Price of GPS-Enabled Handsets to Fall under $200 by 2010

Presently, most handsets with integrated GPS are smartphones or high-end feature phones, with wholesale prices in the range of $250 to $500. However, chipset manufacturers now have solutions in place that will permit the integration of GPS in handsets at lower costs, and provide significant improvements in terms of accuracy, time-to-first-fix, and reception in indoor environments. GPS Chip Market Driven by Integration into Mobile Devices

Over the next few years, the GPS chipset market will be driven by integration into mobile devices, including personal navigation devices (PNDs), cellular handsets, mobile PCs, and a variety of portable consumer electronics (CE) devices, reports In-Stat. The most promising portable CE categories include ultra mobile devices (UMDs), handheld games, portable media players, and digital cameras, the high-tech market research firm says.  more
