Qualcomm to Optimise Indian 3G Network

­Qualcomm is to work with India's MTNL to optimise its existing 3G (wcdma) network in Delhi and Mumbai. MTNL will be working with Qualcomm's Engineering Services Group (ESG), a part of Qualcomm Corporate Engineering Services, a global 3G network consulting service provider.  more

1.45 Million BWA/WiMAX Subscribers Added in 2008

Worldwide, approximately 1.45 million BWA/WiMAX subscribers were added during 2008, while the wcdma subscriber base increased by more than 90 million. The average quarter-over-quarter subscriber growth rate in 2008 was 21.5%, according to the 7th issue of the 4GCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis.  more

BSNL Launches 3G Services in 11 Cities

Ericsson has issued an update on its Sept 2007 contract win from India's BSNL - and says it achieved the country's biggest simultaneous launch of 3G services to date, across 11 major cities. As part of its roll-out strategy, BSNL plans to launch 3G services using wcdma/HSPA technology across more than 700 cities in the first phase.  more

Indian Network "Soft-Launches" 3G Coverage in Delhi

India finally launched a 3G network today as state-controlled operator, Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) launched a wcdma network in the capital city, Delhi. The company is only offering a "soft-launch" though, and coverage is limited to the main business and political districts, Connaught Place, Sanchar Bhawan, Rajaji Marg, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Delhi Gate, and Minto Road.  more

India's BSNL to Launch 3G Network in Jan 2009

India's state owned mobile operator, BSNL will launch its 3G network in the north-eastern states and Chennai by January 2009, Communications and IT Minister A Raja has announced. The second state owned network to have a 3G license, MTNL is still on target to launch its 3G network in Delhi and Mumbai.  more

India to Allow Foreign Cos to Bid for 3G Licenses

India's government has said that it will allow foreign companies to bid for the forthcoming 3G licenses on their own, but will have to find a local partner when they launch services. The government restricts foreign ownership of a telecoms operator to 74% of the firm.  more

India Announces 3G License Auction Plans

The Indian government has finally outlined the details for its forthcoming 3G license allocations in a move which could see up to ten 3G operators in the country. Speaking at a press conference, India's Communications and Information Technology Minister Andimuthu Raja said that the licenses would be sold through a global auction.  more

Asia Pacific Operators in Q3 '07: CDMA staging a revival?

The three months ended September 30th saw a record number of new connections in the Asia Pacific region. Overall, nearly 85 million new customers were connected which is very nearly as many as Germany, Europe's largest economy, has added in the 22 years since mobile service started. The vast majority of these chose to adopt either GSM or wcdma technology, these two accounting for 66.1m and 9.4m of the total respectively.  more
