Ericsson Wins Philippines 3G Upgrade Contract
Ericsson has won a contract to upgrade the Philippine GSM network, SMART with wcdma infrastructure. With this deployment, SMART is the first operator in Southeast Asia to launch a HSPA network in the 850MHz band. The network uses lower frequencies, which improve the quality of the radio signals, extending coverage and enabling rapid deployment. more

Telecom New Zealand Outlines 3G Network Launch Details
Telecom New Zealand has revealed more of the services coming on its wcdma based XT Mobile network including changes to mobile plan charging, and a range of handset and content announcements. Zain successfully trials HSPA+ in a live 3G network
Zain Saudi Arabia has concluded trials of a Nokia Siemens Networks supplied Internet-HSPA (I-HSPA) software upgrade within Zain's existing radio access network. The trial introduced a simple, flat architecture demonstrating how traffic can bypass the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), to deliver improved data transmission speeds. Because of the re-routing, there is no need to build in additional capacity, in effect reducing the OPEX and CAPEX. more

Ericsson to cover Faroe Islands and its offshore with mobile broadband
Ericsson has signed an eight-year contract with Faroe Islands based operator, Faroese Telecom to build and deploy a wcdma/HSPA network for both the 2100MHz and 900MHz frequencies. This will enable Faroese Telecom to deliver high-speed mobile broadband services to remote areas across the Faroe Islands and even offshore platforms in the North Atlantic. more

China Unicom Starts Testing 3G Network in 55 Cities
China Unicom says that it has started trials of its wcdma network - covering 55 cities, the official Xinhua News Agency has reported. The network is expected to expand to 284 cities by September and a full commercial launch is due by the end of this year. more

Japanese Operators Exceed 100 Million 3G Subscribers
