Wataniya's Palestinian GSM Network Launch Delayed

Kuwait's wataniya, which was supposed to have been granted radio spectrum to launch a second GSM network in the Palestinian Authority has not yet had the spectrum released to it.  Palestinians say that the delay is being caused by Israel which is holding onto the spectrum citing security concerns.  more

Palestine Operator Orders Electronic PrePay Top-Ups Platform

Irish mobile payment provider, Macalla has won a contract from Palestine based GSM operator, Jawwal to enable electronic top-up services to its subscribers. Jawwal's new e-TopUp services will be provided on channels including SMS, web, IVR and POS and be available in their shops throughout the territory. Subscribers will be able to top-up their mobile phones directly and via Jawwal agents, and can pay using cash or credit.  more

Fitch Raises Orascom Telecom Tunisie Outlook to Positive

Fitch Ratings has today affirmed Orascom Telecom Tunisie (OTT) Long-term foreign and local currency Issuer Default ratings (IDR) at 'BB+'. Fitch has changed the Outlooks for both Long-term ratings to Positive from Stable. Fitch has also assigned OTT a National Long-term rating of 'A(tun)' with a Positive outlook. OTT has no issues outstanding as of December 2007.  more

Saudi Telecom Takes 26% Stake in Kuwait's 3rd Mobile Operator

Saudi Telecom (STC) has won the auction for a 26 percent stake in Kuwait's third mobile company for a payment of US$908 million. The announcement was made by the Kuwait Investment Authority, although the deal is still awaiting formal approval from the Kuwaiti government.  more

Palestinian Operator Passes One Million Subscriber Landmark

The Palestinian GSM network operator, Jawwal says that it has passed the one million subscriber mark. The company says that the landmark represents the success Jawwal has achieved despite lots of obstacles facing it, such as; the confiscation of its equipments and information systems in the Israeli ports and preventing Jawwal from establishing its towers in Jerusalem and C areas to enhance reception services and expansion strategies in the territories it covers. In addition to having four Israeli giant competitors in the mobile industry competing with it illegally.  more

Second Palestinian Operator Grated Radio Spectrum

Kuwait's wataniya has been formally granted the necessary radio spectrum to start operating the second GSM network in the Palestinian Territories. The Palestinian Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology (MTIT) awarded a GSM/3G license to wataniya last year, after it agreed to pay JD251 million ($354 million).  more

Tunisian Operator Upgrades Provisioning Platform

Comptel has announced that the Tunisia based GSM operator, Tunisiana, a joint venture of Orascom Telecom Holding and wataniya in Tunisia, has selected its Provisioning and Activation Solution. This follows the recent announcement of Comptel being selected as preferred supplier by Orascom Telecom. The solution will be used to improve the service fulfillment processes for mobile services including planned 3G services.  more
