HSDPA Launched in Kuwait

Kuwait's Wataniya Telecom yesterday opened its High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) network, making it the first operator in the Middle East and Africa region to offer mobile services beyond 3G. The solution, provided by Nokia, covers Kuwait and enables Wataniya to offer a wide range of services, among which are audio and visual services, matching customers' expectations. This follows a supply agreement signed in May 2005. more

Maldives Operator Secures Funding

Wataniya Telecom Maldives says that it has completed its long term financing, drawing down on a US$27 million facility, comprised of $20 million from the IFC (International Finance Corporation) and $7 million from the OPEC Fund. Wataniya Telecom Maldives has also secured a revolving facility of US$4.5 million from the Bank of Maldives. In addition to funding the network build, the loan will finance a fiber optic submarine cable, to improve the quality of international communications. more

GSM Network gets World Bank Loan

The International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, has announced the signing of a US$20 million loan to Wataniya Telecom Maldives which is building a GSM network in the island nation. In addition, IFC mobilized a US$7 million parallel loan from the OPEC Fund for International Development, an inter-governmental development finance institution, which seeks to promote cooperation between OPEC member states and other developing countries. more

Maldives Operator Prepares for 3G

Wataniya Telecom Maldives has signed a GSM and 3G core network agreement with China's Huawei Technologies. The contract also includes a whole set of mobile service platforms and a UMTS RAN system. This is the first contract win for Huawei Technologies in Maldives. Kuwait's PSTN and Cellular markets: Approaching steady state

The cellular market in Kuwait took off rapidly after the entry of Wataniya in 1999 as the second mobile operator. The penetration rate in Kuwait has climbed to more than 80% due in large part to the heavy marketing campaigns during 2004. Cellular revenues were more than double the PSTN revenues in 2003. The Arab Advisors Group projects that the current breakdown will not change significantly over the forecast period, as PSTN and cellular revenues will remain fairly consistent as Kuwait's telecom market nears saturation. Value added services and compelling content will be the keys for driving usage and growth in this very well developed telecommunications market. more
