FCC close to resolving NextWave problem
The Federal Communications Commission and NextWave are understood to have reached a preliminary agreement to resolve their long standing dispute over ownership of PCS spectrum in the USA. The new agreement would result in NextWave receiving part-payment for the spectrum that it holds, in December and the government receiving the remainder in May next year. The biggest problem is a request from Verizon Wireless for a one year grace period before it has to pay the US$8 billion that it bid for blocks of NextWave spectrum. Any agreement between the FCC and NextWave will have to be approved by the Office of Management and Budget as it will leave the American government with about US$5 billion less than it had originally expected. The FCC has come under pressure to negotiate a resolution to the problem rather than resort to a lengthy legal battle as it would release funds to the government which are needed to finance the economic program that was initiated following the attacks on New York and washington in September." more
