Survey Shows Mobile Apps Integral to Small Business Operations, Remote Workers on the Rise
America's small businesses are increasingly reliant on mobile applications, Facebook pages for their companies, and employees working remotely via wireless technologies, according to an AT&T survey. Specifically, nearly three-fourths (72%) indicate they use mobile apps in their business, with roughly four in ten (38%) reporting they could not survive - or it would be a major challenge to survive - without mobile apps. more

Improving Phone Coverage on Washington DC's Underground Railway
The metro railway serving Washington D.C. has started deploying underground mobile phone coverage infrastructure, covering 20 of the Metro's busiest stations. The network, which will provide coverage for customers of Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, AT&T and T-Mobile is expected to switch on in October. more

Sprint Nextel Cites WiMAX Network Progress For 2007
Sprint Nextel has announced progress with its plans for a large scale WiMAX deployment. Sprint Nextel intends to launch Mobile WiMAX broadband services in initial markets by year-end 2007 with a larger roll-out encompassing at least 100 million people by year-end 2008. more

More US Households Abandoning the Landline
More and more USA households are dropping their landlines and opting to go completely wireless. According to Telephia, the largest provider of consumer research to the communications and new media markets, households in Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul have the highest rate of wireless substitution among the 20 largest cities in the country. Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul posted household wireless substitution rates of 19 and 15.2 percent, respectively. The Tampa metropolitan area secured a 15.1 percent rate, representing nearly 177,000 households. Nearly 219,000 (14.3%) households in Atlanta and 220,000 (13.6%) households in Washington D.C. cut the cord. Rounding out the top 10 were Phoenix , Seattle , Denver , Boston and Los Angeles . more

Majority of Washingtonians want changes in cell phone laws
According to PEMCO's 2005 Northwest Insurance Poll, four out of five Washington State drivers believe that talking on cell phones while driving should be legal only with hands-free devices, or made illegal altogether, but changes to state law won't likely happen soon. "People are really tired of getting on the road and seeing people talking on a phone and not watching the road," said Sen. Tracey J. Eide, D-Federal Way. Eide sponsored a bill that would require the use of a hands-free device while driving, but it failed to pass through the state legislature for the fifth year in a row. more

Qualcomm has announced the completion and results of a successful CDMA2000 1xEV-DO pilot program with IBM. The three-month trial, involving IBM sales representatives in the San Diego and Washington D.C. regions, equipped with CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-enabled laptops, enabled the sales executives to spend on average 2.9 more hours a week with customers. more

Verizon to expand its 3G network
The USA based, Verizon Wireless says that it will begin immediately to expand its BroadbandAccess service nationally. Powered by Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) wide-area network, BroadbandAccess commercial service, with average user speeds of 300-500 kilobits per second (kbps), is expected to be available in many major U.S. cities this summer. more

Verizon launches high speed data service
The USA based CDMA operator, Verizon Wireless has launched its 1xEVDO network, under the BroadbandAccess brand name. Beginning October 1, 2003, customers in Washington D.C. and San Diego can purchase BroadbandAccess to mirror their desktop environment while working remotely. The new service is part of the company's VZOffice suite of wireless products and services for businesses. more

The cost of using a cell phone in the USA declined by nearly 2% in June, according to Econ One, an economic research and consulting firm, which studies the cost of wireless service. The Econ One Research wireless cost index, which measures the average cost of wireless service in the top 25 US markets based on four typical levels of use declined $0.70 in June - a 1.9% decline over the reported cost of wireless service in May. more
