China Unicom Starts Testing 3G Network in 55 Cities

China Unicom says that it has started trials of its WCDMA network - covering 55 cities, the official Xinhua News Agency has reported. The network is expected to expand to 284 cities by September and a full commercial launch is due by the end of this year.  more

Top-five handset OEM signs first Coolteq deal

Nujira, a developer of mobile phone platforms says that it has signed a deal with an unnamed handset manufacturer to provide its Coolteq-l handset development platform. The unnamed customer is reported to be one of the world's top five handset makers.  more

Motorola Wins Chinese 3G Contract

Motorola says that it has won a w-cdma contract with China Unicom for an undisclosed amount. Under the contract, Motorola will provide China Unicom with w-cdma radio access network equipment, packet switched core network (PS core), and 2G/3G interoperability functions that will enable the integration of China Unicom's GSM and w-cdma networks.  more

China Unicom Selects Alcatel-Lucent to Deploy 3G Networks in 14 Provinces

Alcatel-Lucent says that it has been selected by China Unicom to deploy 3G w-cdma networks in 14 Chinese provinces. Initial network deployments in the cities of Tianjin, Baoding, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Guiyang and Guilin are expected to be completed in May, 2009.  more

China Unicom Plans 3G Launch by Year-End

China Unicom expects to start a trial WCDMA network in seven cities by the end of this year - said Chang Xiaobing, chairman and CEO of the mobile network operator. Sources within the company suggest that the seven cities will be Shanghai, Shenzhen, Foshan, Liuzhou, Zhengzhou, Baoding and Wuxi, with about 100 w-cdma base stations in each city.   more

Alcatel-Lucent expands 3G W-CDMA/HSPA portfolio

Alcatel-Lucent has launched a new distributed base station product, the fanless 60-watt remote radio head (RRH) node B for WCDMA networks. The company says that the new base station enables a 50% increase in available output power over the previous generation of equipment and offers similar improvements as compared to competitors' products currently on the market.   more

W-CDMA market sees dynamic growth

The market for w-cdma handsets is forecast to see dynamic growth in the next few years, resulting in more than 1 billion handsets being shipped between 2006 and 2012 says a new report from IMS Research. According to the report, the market for WCDMA handsets will have a CAGR of 22% over the next five years, despite competition from alternative 3G technologies, such as WiMAX.  more

ZTE Wins Nepal GSM and 3G Contract

China's ZTE Corp. has been awarded by Nepal Telecom, a project that will help the telecom company to add 3.5 million lines to reach total GSM mobile capacity of 5 million lines within next three years. The project, which is the biggest ever embarked by NT, includes installation of new networks for GSM mobile phones services as well as 3G cellular networks based on w-cdma protocol. more
