Caribbean & Latin America - CDMA Enters its "Sunset" Phase
The technology story in the Caribbean & Latin America (CALA) region is simple: most US based technologies are in full retreat, while the international GSM/w-cdma standards are proliferating. During the quarter, the number of customers connected to AMPS, TDMA and CDMA systems declined by 4.4m overall, bringing the number of disconnections so far this year to 19.9m, or 5.2% of the starting base. more

Brazil's CDMA Base Heading Towards Extinction
The latest monthly data from Anatel, the Brazilian regulator, shows a marked reduction in the pace of the growth in the market. This should come as no surprise - the fourth quarter saw a record number of new connections and included two of the four best months ever. The industry added a total of 1.31m new connections in January, to take the market total to 151.9m, equivalent to nearly 70% penetration. more

Global W-CDMA base doubles as CDMA decline gathers pace

Latin American CDMA decline continues as Vivo GSM service takes off
In Q1 2007 the number of CDMA customers in Caribbean & Latin America (CALA) declined for the first time. Data for the second quarter shows that this was result was not a statistical aberration, but rather a consequence of the fact that almost all of the region's CDMA champions - including, most significantly, Vivo - have now chosen to adopt GSM technology. more
In last week's issue of The Mobile World Briefing (Issue 70) we commented on the fact that Telecom New Zealand (TCNZ), the incumbent operator in New Zealand, reported significantly lower ARPUs than did Vodafone, its only competitor. We concluded that in part, this was down to its selection of CDMA technology, which meant that it picked up a smaller proportion of the country's roaming revenues. In the light of this, it comes as no great surprise to hear that TCNZ now intends to deploy a w-cdma network, which it will operate in parallel with its existing system. Following Telstra's decision to abandon CDMA technology in Australia, TCNZ was out on a limb. Admittedly, there are other CDMA systems in the region, notably in Korea, China and Japan, but the nearest of these is over 5,000 miles away so the opportunity for casual traffic is limited. TCNZ is the latest of a growing number of operators that have taken the decision to adopt the GSM/w-cdma standard, Vivo in Brazil and Reliance in India being two others who have recently taken the same route. more
