Smartphone sales buck the recession
A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession. more

WCDMA equipment up 12% in 3Q; Nokia Siemens leads in mobile switch subsystems

Asian Operators Agree to Improved Roaming for BlackBerry Users
The Asian mobile operators group, Conexus Mobile Alliance has announced the start of the regional rollout of a mobile data roaming plan for BlackBerry smartphones among Alliance members. The new plan offers a high mobile data access ceiling in most countries to cater to the data usage needs of frequent mobile roamers. more

China Mobile Seeking Cut-Down Version of Apple's iPhone
China Mobile is expected to officially launch the Apple iPhone on its network shortly - but with some of the functionality removed to comply with Chinese regulations. The South China Morning Post, citing a report from the Daiwa Institute of Research said that the 3G and Wi-Fi services would be disabled on the Chinese model. more
