Samsung Electronics and Motorola defied the normal seasonal slowdown in mobile-phone unit production in the first quarter, allowing them to significantly boost their market share, according to iSuppli Corp. Worldwide mobile-phone production in the first quarter amounted to 220 million units, down 9.5% from 243 million units in the fourth quarter of 2005, according to the research firm. Mobile-phone shipments typically decelerate in the first quarter following the holiday selling season in the fourth quarter. With this mind, the first quarter was actually a robust period for the mobile-phone market, with shipments rising 26.1% compared to the first quarter of 2005. This robust performance has prompted iSuppli to raise its annual forecast for mobile-phone shipments in 2006. more

Mobile Phone Shipments Surge in 2005 Q4 - report
Mobile-phone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2005 reached a record level of 241.5 million units, driving up shipments for the entire year to 812.5 million units according to iSuppli. These final shipment numbers slightly exceeded iSuppli's forecast, which called for 239 million mobile-phone shipments in the fourth quarter and 810 million units for all of 2005. The fourth-quarter total represented the highest level of quarterly shipments in the history of the mobile-phone business, easily exceeding the previous peak of 200 million unit shipments in the fourth quarter of 2004. more

After suffering the typical seasonal slowdown in the first three months of the year, mobile-phone unit production will rise sequentially in the second quarter and for the remainder of 2005, iSuppli Corp. predicts. Mobile-phone production in the first quarter of 2005 amounted to 173 million units, down 13% from 200 million in the fourth quarter of 2004. more
