NEC Wins "Super 3G" Contract in Japan

Japan's NTT DoCoMo has contracted with NEC to provide core network EPC (Evolved Packet Core) systems that support NTT DoCoMoĆ's "Super 3G" next generation mobile phone networks. Super3G is a standard system and an advanced version of the w-cdma-extended technologies HSDPA and HSUPA, which achieves data transmission speeds of 100Mbps or more in downlink and 50Mbps or more in uplink access.  more

DoCoMo Achieves 250Mbps Downlink in Super 3G Field Experiment

W-CDMA market sees dynamic growth

The market for w-cdma handsets is forecast to see dynamic growth in the next few years, resulting in more than 1 billion handsets being shipped between 2006 and 2012 says a new report from IMS Research. According to the report, the market for WCDMA handsets will have a CAGR of 22% over the next five years, despite competition from alternative 3G technologies, such as WiMAX.  more

Fujitsu "3G Evolution" Base Station Achieves Downlink Speed of 900Mbps

In November 2006 Fujitsu was selected by DoCoMo to develop and manufacture prototypes and commercial equipment for DoCoMo's "Super 3G" wireless base stations. Since then, DoCoMo and Fujitsu Laboratories have made progress in jointly developing prototype wireless base station equipment, and maximum downlink transmission speeds of approximately 900Mbps have now been achieved through the application of MIMO technology, a core technology for high-speed, high-volume wireless communications.  more

DoCoMo to test "Super 3G" Network"

Japan's DoCoMo says that it will begin testing an experimental "Super 3G" system later this month. With this experiment, DoCoMo will seek to achieve a downlink transmission rate of 300Mbps over a high-speed wireless network. more

Anritsu Extends HSUPA Protocol Test Capability

Following their success in completing the first 3GPP HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) protocol conformance test case, Anritsu says that it is introducing full HSUPA capability for its Protocol Test System (PTS). The PTS has been developed with the future in mind and supports the maximum 5.7Mbps HSUPA data rate combined with a proven 14.4Mbps HSDPA capability, meaning future upgrades are not required, providing valuable protection to investment. more

HSUPA Test Cases Released

Anritsu has announced the completion of what it says is the first 3GPP HSUPA protocol conformance test case. HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) is a critical element in the delivery of high speed data rates on 3G mobile networks. This latest extension of 3G technology provides a major improvement to data transfer rates from the mobile terminal to the network by increasing uplink speeds from 384kbps to 5.7Mbps. more

EDGE Handset Shipments to Reach 148 Million Units in 2006

EDGE-enabled handsets have never attracted the same levels of attention that "sexier" technologies such as WCDMA and HSDPA have enjoyed. In fact EDGE can best be described as the Cinderella of the cellular handset world. DoCoMo Plans for Super 3G Service

DoCoMo has announced that it intendeds to start accept proposals from suppliers for development of equipment for Super 3G base stations and handsets. DoCoMo will select one or more suppliers for each of these categories around October and aims to complete the technology with the selected suppliers before the end of 2009. more
