Alcatel-Lucent Wins Chinese Contracts Worth $1.7 Billion
Alcatel-Lucent has inked two framework agreements valued US$1.7 billion in total with China Mobile and China Telecom, to provide network upgrades, integration and maintenance services in 2009. The agreements were secured through Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese company. more

Top-five handset OEM signs first Coolteq deal
Nujira, a developer of mobile phone platforms says that it has signed a deal with an unnamed handset manufacturer to provide its Coolteq-l handset development platform. The unnamed customer is reported to be one of the world's top five handset makers. more

China Unicom Selects Alcatel-Lucent to Deploy 3G Networks in 14 Provinces
Alcatel-Lucent says that it has been selected by China Unicom to deploy 3G w-cdma networks in 14 Chinese provinces. Initial network deployments in the cities of Tianjin, Baoding, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Guiyang and Guilin are expected to be completed in May, 2009. more

Global GSM Subscriber Growth Rate to Slow in 2008
ABI Research is forecasting that global GSM subscriber growth to slow from a year-on-year rate of over 22% in 2006/07 to 14% in 2008/09, mainly due to the increased migration of subscribers to UMTS 3G technologies. UMTS (including HSDPA) experienced a nearly 83% year-on-year growth rate in 2006/07. ABI Research expects global GSM subscriber numbers to show a negative growth rate starting in 2013, as by then GSM will become less attractive compared to the cheaper 3G services; there will also be losses due to the proliferation of mobile WiMAX and 4G networks. more

In Singapore, the total mobile customer base is now likely to have surpassed the 5 million mark, having reached 4.99 million at the end of Q2 2007. Despite breaking through the 100% penetration barrier in Q4 2006, growth shows no sign of slowing, with another 4.0pp added in the second quarter to reach 109.5% penetration at the end of the second quarter. more
