Istanbul Airport Gains Indoor Cell Phone Coverage
Turkey's three operators- AVEA, Turkcell and vodafone - have worked with Andrew Solutions to deploy indoor wireless coverage in Istanbul's new Sabiha Gokcen Airport. Andrew supplied its ION-M optical distributed antenna system (DAS), and Mikom Microwave, Andrew's business partner in Turkey, assisted with system design and commissioning. Andrew's ION-M is a multi-operator coverage and capacity solution, supporting the operators' 2G and 3G subscribers in the airport. ION-M transmits wireless signals across both fiber optic and coaxial cables to remote antennas from a master unit. The result is clear wireless coverage for travelers and employees throughout the Sabiha Gokcen Airport campus. more

Vodafone Turkey Lost 1.24 Million Subscribers in Q1 2009
Turkey followed Italy and the UK in suffering a quarterly loss to its customer base. The 1.44m decline was the largest ever seen, as well as being the first for seven years. At the end of Q1 09, the total customer base stood at 64.48m, just 3.1% above the Q1 08 total. This was the lowest growth rate ever recorded in the Turkish market and 12.3pp below the year-earlier rate. Penetration fell back below 90% during the quarter, finishing on 89.0%. However, there is every chance that a resurgence in growth will take penetration over 100% once 3G is launched, with reports suggesting that the first W-CDMA networks will be operational very soon. more

Just a few days after apparently announcing plans to hire 500 extra staff this year, vodafone Turkey has announced 260 job cuts as part of a corporate restructuring. The job cuts came as part of "an organizational overhaul" and to increase efficiency, the company said in a statement. more

Turkey has awarded three 3G licenses to the incumbent operators following an auction to battle over the spectrum allocation. Turkcell won the largest block (A License) with a bid of ¢â€š¬358 million ($462 million), followed by vodafone and Avea with bids of ¢â€š¬250 million (US$323 million) and ¢â€š¬214 million (US$276 million) respectively. more

Turkey to Offer 3G Licenses Within Six Months
Turkey is to launch a tender for 3G licenses within the next six months, reports the government's Official Gazette, where all new laws are published. According to the Gazette, the minimum value of the A License is set as US$405 million, while the minimum value is US$355 million for the B License, US$304 million for the C License and US$253 million for the D License. more
