Vodafone Quarterly Profits Jump 180% Despite Indian Impairment Charge

vodafone has reported a 180% jump in its first quarter profits compared to the year before, thanks to the removal of write-downs of £5.9 billion (US$8.5 billion) that impacted its results a year ago. The company recorded a net income of £8.62 billion (US$12.4 billion), compared to £3.1 billion (US$4.5 billion) a year ago. The company also wrote down its Indian assets by £2.3 billion (US$3.32 billion) due to increased competition in the market, although it increased the valuation of its Turkish subsidiary by £200 million.  more

Vodafone Q2 Revenues Rise by 9.6% to $17.7 Billion

vodafone has reported that its Q2 revenues were up 9.3% to £10.74 billion (US$17.7 billion), including the positive impact of exchange rate movements of 8.6 percentage points and a 3.1 percentage point benefit from merger and acquisition activity, primarily attributable to the additional stake in Vodacom.  more

Vodafone Granted Extra Time to Expand its Qatari Network

Qatar's telecoms regulator, ictQATAR has amended the license recently granted to vodafone to grant the company an additional six months to achieve national coverage. Under the terms of its license vodafone Qatar was required to achieve 98% population coverage and launch full services by 1 March 2009. The revised terms require 98% coverage by 1 September 2009 and the launch of services, including two-way phone mobile and SMS, by 1 July 2009.  more

ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year

China's ZTE is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. The company had set itself a target of gaining a top-5 placement by 2011, but did accept that shrinking market share in competitors could bring that date forward.  more

Hutchison Telecom Confirms Spin-Off Plans for Hong Kong Holdings

Hong Kong based Hutchison Telecom has reported a 16% rise in full-year revenues to HK$24 billion (US$3.1 billion) and an increase of 16.8% in EBITDA to HK$6.14 billion (US$791 million). Net income dropped precipitously to HK$1.88 billion (US$242 million) from the extraordinary HK66.8 billion a year ago - which was largely due to the one-off gain from the sale of its Indian interests to vodafone.  more

Industry to Settle on a Generic Phone Charger for All Mobile Phones

The GSMA and 17 mobile operators and manufacturers have announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers.  more
