Telecom Italia Mobile Lost 1.5 Million Customers in 2008
The Italian market lost a total of 135k customers over the year, with net losses in Q2 and Q4 trumping the smaller net gains in the other two periods. The year closed with a total base of 88.58m, compared to 88.72m, while penetration dropped from 152.6% to 152.4%. more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year
China's ZTE is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. Vodafone Found to Offer UK's Lowest Roaming Data Download Charges
A study carried out by price comparison website, Broadband-Expert, has revealed massive discrepancies between the UK's top 5 mobile broadband providers for data usage abroad. Orange was the most expensive, charging £3.94 per Mb inside the EU and £6.32 per Mb outside the EU. vodafone were found to be the cheapest provider, charging £9.99 for a day's use of up to at 50Mb inside the EU (which equates to 20p per Mb). more

Vodafone Offers SMS Access to Twitter in the UK
Fast growing micro-blogging service, Twitter has announced via its own "macro-blog" that vodafone UK has resumed allowing updates via SMS. Anyone in the world can update Twitter via SMS but receiving tweets on a mobile phone has been restricted to North America due to the costs of providing the service. more

New Zealand Regulator Wants Lower Mobile Termination Rates
New Zealand's Commerce Commission has sent letters to the country's three mobile phone networks warning that it wants a reduction in their mobile termination rates. The three networks had sent submissions to the Commission to lower their rates voluntarily, but the Commission has replied saying that the cuts don't go far enough. more

Vodafone Signs Partnership Deal in Thailand
vodafone and Thailand's DTAC have jointly announced that they have signed a Partner Market agreement. Under the terms of this agreement, DTAC will have exclusive access to vodafone's range of products, devices and services in Thailand and will be able to draw on vodafone's experience in supply chain management, technology development, the acquisition of enterprise customers as well as improved inter-working between networks. more
